UK energy retailer Octopus Energy, part-owned by Australia’s Origin Energy, has launched a new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) bundle for electric vehicle users. The package combines a BYD Dolphin EV, a Zaptec Pro home charger, and access to free home charging.
While it’s currently available only in the UK, the offer is especially relevant to Australia given the strong local presence of BYD, Origin Energy, and Zaptec down under.

Offered for less than £300 per month (around A$629), the deal allows drivers to lease the car and charger, while also contributing to the energy grid. Octopus says the bundle can help users save roughly £620 (A$1,300) in energy costs and up to £1,000 (A$2,096) in vehicle expenses each year.

To unlock these savings, participants must plug in their car at least 20 times a month for 12-hour charging sessions. The charger must remain connected to Octopus’s Kraken software, and the company will manage the required G99 energy export approval on behalf of the customer.
V2G Tech and Charging Details
While full technical details haven’t been confirmed, the use of Zaptec Pro chargers suggests the program is based on AC vehicle-to-grid technology. These chargers support the ISO15118 standard to communicate with the vehicle and operate using the OCPP 1.6j protocol to connect with the cloud.

The charger is a key part of the system, enabling bidirectional energy flow and allowing EVs to help stabilise the grid during peak demand periods.
Octopus is also working to ensure the bundle is inclusive, partnering with motability services to support drivers and passengers with disabilities.

Growing Links to the Australian Market
Zaptec’s chargers were recently introduced to Australia during the Sydney EV Infrastructure Summit through distributor SEVR. Meanwhile, BYD is already well-established locally, with the Dolphin among its best-selling models. Origin Energy also plays a major role in the domestic energy landscape and uses the Kraken platform developed by Octopus.

With these three key players already present in Australia, the V2G bundle unveiled in the UK could be well-positioned for a local rollout in the near future, offering Aussie drivers a smart way to save money and support the grid at the same time.
