BYD Bets On Large SUV EV As Competitors Step Back

Comments

BYD Australia is preparing to enter the large electric SUV market with a new zero-emission model, positioning itself as a rival to the Kia EV9 and the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 9. While the exact design and specifications of this new vehicle remain unconfirmed, the move signals BYD’s intention to compete in a segment where other major brands, such as Honda and Ford, have recently withdrawn due to limited consumer interest.

Timing and Market Readiness

According to BYD Australia’s Head of Product, Sajid Hasan, launching a large all-electric SUV is inevitable but not imminent. He explained that while the market is moving in that direction and the “door is open,” BYD’s immediate focus remains on rolling out its current lineup, which includes a mix of electric and plug-in hybrid models. Hasan suggests that a large battery-electric SUV will come when the market conditions are right and BYD is ready to prioritise it.

Sealion 8 Leads the Way

BYD’s next releases in Australia include the Atto 2 small electric SUV expected later this year, followed by the Sealion 8, a large plug-in hybrid SUV. Known as the Tang L in China, the Sealion 8 is available there both as a plug-in hybrid and a full battery electric vehicle. The electric version boasts up to 810kW combined power and an 83.2 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery that offers a claimed range of up to 700 km.

While the EV variant of the Sealion 8 has not been officially confirmed for Australia, there are strong indications that BYD plans to offer both plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions under the same model name. Hasan highlighted that plug-in hybrids remain the preferred option for now, given current market trends and customer readiness.

Competing in a Changing Segment

BYD’s move contrasts sharply with the recent retreat of other global automakers from the large electric SUV category. The company sees an opportunity to meet growing demand for large, electrified vehicles, blending plug-in hybrid technology with full battery-electric options over time. This strategy reflects BYD’s broader approach to expanding its presence in Australia’s evolving EV market while catering to a variety of consumer preferences.
