Following the March reveal of its new 1,000 kW-capable Super e-Platform, BYD has now flipped the switch on its first ultra-fast charging sites in China. The headline feature? A jaw-dropping 400 km of range in just five minutes. That’s 2 km of range every second.

These new chargers, capable of delivering 1,000 volts and 1,000 amps, are among the most powerful ever deployed for mass-market EVs. The first site to go live is just outside Shenzhen, BYD’s hometown, and it’s part of a partnership with energy giant Sinopec and local grid operators.
Each charging bay comes with three twin-plug stations, thoughtfully designed to accommodate both reverse-in and front-in parking. And yes, there are additional chargers for BYD models not equipped with the new tech.

The new Super e-Platform vehicles, currently the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV—are the first to support these blistering 10C charging speeds, meaning their batteries can take a full charge up to 10 times per hour. First deliveries for these high-end models kicked off in mid-April, just weeks after pre-sales opened.
In terms of pricing for the Chinese market, the Han L starts at around A$58,500 while the Tang L SUV comes in from A$75,800. And with these fast-charging stations already online, BYD isn’t just selling a vehicle but packaging it with a high-speed charging ecosystem to back it.

For petrol drivers still clinging to range anxiety, this is the kind of shift that turns heads.
While these ultra-rapid chargers are China-first for now, the infrastructure rollout signals a clear direction for BYD’s global ambitions. With plans for international expansion and the tech to match, Australia could very well be seeing these chargers on its roads sooner than expected.
