Australia Post has taken a significant step in its push toward cleaner transport, introducing 36 new Mercedes-Benz eVito electric vans into its national delivery fleet. This marks the first time the postal service has trialed electric vans at this scale.
The vans will operate on 100% renewable electricity, powered through Australia Post’s existing charging network. Designed for frequent stop-and-start city driving, the eVito’s efficiency is expected to make it well suited to busy delivery routes across the country.

Why This Matters
Richard Pittard, Chief Sustainability Officer at Australia Post, described the move as a milestone in the organisation’s wider fleet electrification and decarbonization strategy.
“It’s a meaningful step forward as we continue building a modern, sustainable delivery network that meets the evolving needs of our customers while reducing our environmental impact,” Pittard said.
Australia Post already has more than 5,000 electric vehicles in operation, including electric bikes and smaller delivery vehicles, but this is its largest trial of electric vans so far.

Building Toward a Greener Fleet
Australia Post has committed to working closely with Mercedes-Benz to ensure drivers are trained and supported as the vans are rolled out. The collaboration is expected to smooth the transition and provide insights into how larger EVs perform in day-to-day operations.
This trial represents more than just an expansion of the fleet — it’s a test case for scaling electric vans across Australia Post’s delivery network. If successful, it could pave the way for a wider adoption of electric vans, further cutting emissions from one of the nation’s most visible logistics operators.
