Key Points

  • Australia’s first large-scale residential V2G trial will test EVs as energy storage for homes and the grid.
  • Four automakers — Hyundai, Kia, BYD, and Zeekr — are supporting the initiative, protecting battery warranties.
  • Smart charging software will manage when to charge and discharge, while ensuring cars are ready to drive.
  • Participants may access discounted chargers, bill savings, and peak export credits.
  • The trial aims to shape a 2026 nationwide rollout, bringing V2G capability to more EV owners.

Australia’s energy and automotive sectors are joining forces in a major step forward for electric vehicle innovation. AGL has announced the launch of its first large-scale residential Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) trial, working with Hyundai, Kia, BYD, and Zeekr to test how EVs can double as mobile energy assets.

The trial marks the first time in Australia that carmakers have formally supported V2G integration by ensuring customer battery warranties remain intact.

Turning EVs Into Home Batteries

AGL says the typical EV battery can store enough energy to power a home for three days. By enabling two-way energy flow, customers will be able to charge their vehicles when electricity is cheapest and feed energy back to their homes orinto the grid when demand is highest.

The company’s smart software will manage the process, ensuring each vehicle is fully charged when needed. Trial participants will also have the option to set preferences for when their vehicle should be ready to drive.

AGL Head of Innovation and Strategy, Renae Gasmier, said the initiative is about reimagining the role of EVs:

“Owners need to think about their EVs as more than cars, but rather as home batteries on wheels.”

Collaboration Across Energy and Automotive

This trial brings together all major National Electricity Market (NEM) distribution providers, EV manufacturers, and charging equipment suppliers. For the first 50 eligible households, AGL will provide a discounted bi-directional charger with installation.

Industry leaders from Hyundai, Kia, BYD, and the Electric Vehicle Council have all endorsed the trial, pointing to both cost-of-living benefits and national energy stability.

  • Hyundai said the project shows EVs can “do far more than drive.”
  • Kia highlighted the role of V2G in reducing household energy bills.
  • BYD described it as “a powerful step forward in new energy mobility.”
  • The Electric Vehicle Council noted that EVs can store five times more energy than a typical home battery, creating a huge untapped resource.
