Audi is bringing back a name that once stood for doing more with less.
More than two decades after the original A2 disappeared, the nameplate is returning as an electric hatchback with a very different brief. The new A2 e-tron is bigger, faster and considerably more powerful than its tiny predecessor, but efficiency remains central to the formula.
The new model will sit on Volkswagen Group's MEB+ electric platform and offer rear-wheel drive, multiple battery options and up to 646km of claimed range.
For Australian buyers, there's another reason to keep an eye on it. Audi is evaluating the A2 e-tron for Australia, with a potential local launch in 2027.
A bigger A2 with efficiency still at its core
The original A2 was famous for its lightweight aluminium construction and clever packaging.
The new car takes a completely different engineering route, using a conventional steel monocoque body, but Audi has retained the obsession with aerodynamic efficiency.
At around 4.3 metres long, the new A2 is substantially larger than the 3.83m original. Its 2770mm wheelbase also gives it considerably more space inside.
Audi has worked extensively on airflow, with the A2 featuring:
- A flat underbody
- Aerodynamic wheel designs
- Wheel-arch gap reducers
- Integrated airflow openings around the wheel arches
- A rounded roofline inspired by the original A2
The result is a claimed 0.24 coefficient of drag, helping the most efficient version consume as little as 12.8kWh/100km.
The packaging is useful, too. There's a 13-litre frunk, while the rear boot provides 396 litres with the seats upright and up to 1336 litres when they're folded.

Up to 646km of range from an 84kWh battery
Audi will offer four versions of the A2 e-tron, ranging from a 125kW entry model through to a 240kW flagship.
The three lower-powered versions share their basic hardware with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, while the most powerful A2 borrows heavily from the Cupra Born VZ.
Battery chemistry varies depending on the version, with LFP packs used in the two entry models and NMC batteries in the larger-battery versions.
The range-topping 170kW variant is actually the range champion, offering a claimed 646km.
The 240kW version sacrifices some range for performance, cutting the claimed maximum to 630km while reducing the 0–100km/h time to 5.7 seconds.

The A2 also supports bidirectional charging, meaning it can supply power to external equipment and, in some countries, potentially serve as a home energy storage system.
That could become an increasingly useful feature for Australian buyers if the technology and local regulations allow it.

A surprisingly tactile interior
Audi hasn't simply copied the cabin from its Volkswagen Group siblings.
The A2 gets its own interior design, including a material called Softwrap, which covers sections of the dashboard and door panels with fabric rather than relying entirely on hard plastics.
There's a curved display assembly containing an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.8-inch MMI touchscreen.
Interestingly, Audi hasn't added the separate passenger touchscreen found in some of its newer models.
The steering wheel also retains capacitive controls, rather than the physical buttons recently introduced on the ID.3 Neo and Cupra Born.
One of the more interesting additions is Audi's Fidlock mounting system. Magnets allow owners to attach modular accessories such as:
- Cupholders
- Charging-cable storage bags
- Tie-down straps
There are three mounting points in the centre console as standard, while three additional mounting points in the boot are optional.
The A2 also gets electronically operated door handles hidden within the window trim. Each door has its own energy storage unit, allowing the handles to continue working if the main electrical system fails.
Safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, swerve assist and adaptive cruise control.
Higher-spec versions can also be equipped with a panoramic roof, 360-degree camera, 30-colour ambient lighting and a 660W, 14-speaker Sonos audio system.
When is the Audi A2 e-tron coming to Australia?
This is where things remain uncertain.
Audi has confirmed the A2 e-tron is being evaluated for Australia, but there is currently no confirmed local launch date, price or specification.
European orders are expected to open soon, with first deliveries scheduled for December 2026.
If the Australian business gives the car the green light, a 2027 arrival is possible, but it should not yet be treated as a confirmed local launch.
The timing would make sense for Audi's Australian range. With production of the A1 and Q2 ending in April 2026, the A2 e-tron will become the smallest model in Audi's global line-up.
German pricing starts at €38,200, equivalent to around A$61,500 based on the conversion provided. However, that figure should not be treated as an indication of Australian pricing, which would depend on local taxes, specifications, shipping and Audi Australia's positioning.
For Australia, the A2 could be an intriguing proposition: a relatively compact EV with up to 646km of claimed range, efficient powertrains and practical hatchback packaging.
The big question now is whether Audi thinks Australian buyers will get the chance to experience it.
