The 2026 BYD Atto 1 Premium is a four-seat electric compact hatchback priced from $27,990 before on-road costs, or $31,113 driveaway. At full retail price it is the variant to buy of the two, with 310 km of WLTP range against 220 km for the Essential, faster DC charging and a stronger motor. If you can get the Essential at BYD's $19,990 driveaway offer, that is the better value pick if your use case suits it.
It competes in the compact hatchback segment. Its electric rivals are the Geely EX2 and the GAC Aion UT, and it also takes on the cheapest small petrol cars on sale. BYD loaned us the Atto 1 Premium for 10 days, and we drove it mostly around metro Sydney.
It suits households that want a second car for urban running. You’ll need a reliable charging setup, otherwise the regular top ups required could become quite inconvenient. It can handle longer trips such as Sydney to Canberra, but it needs a short charging stop midway. It has a few compromises, which feels fine at $19,990 but less convincing at $31,113 driveaway, particularly given the competition which offer compelling alternatives.

Price and Key Features
The Premium is $27,990 RRP before on-road costs or $31,113 driveaway in NSW. Here is what stands out at that price:
- 310 km WLTP range from a 43.2 kWh usable LFP battery.
- Peak DC charging of 85 kW, the fastest of the five compact hatchback EVs priced within $10,000 of it in the Zecar EV database.
- 11 kW AC charging, which suits owners who rely on public AC chargers.
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L) output of up to 2.2 kW for running appliances.
- A 2,500 mm wheelbase that gives four adults more room than the 3,990 mm body suggests.
- Eligible for the electric car FBT exemption, which makes a novated lease attractive.
BYD's current driveaway offer applies to the Essential, not the Premium. The Essential is $19,990 driveaway on orders placed between 15 September and 15 December 2026, with delivery required by 31 December 2026. It cannot be combined with BYD's 5% novated lease discount. At the time of writing, we have not seen a national driveaway offer for the Premium.

The Atto 1 looks different from anything else at this price. The angular lines and sharp creases give it a design that resembles a hatchback Lamborghini, and it stands out on the road, particularly in pine lime.

It is a small car. At 3,990 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,590 mm tall, it is about 280 mm shorter than the 4,270 mm GAC Aion UT, and its 2,500 mm wheelbase is 250 mm shorter than the Aion UT's 2,750 mm. The 9.9 m turning circle helps in tight city streets.

Interior, Space and Technology
Touchscreen and Climate Controls

The touchscreen is easy to use. Like many cars today, though, it buries many functions in its menus. The screen is also on the small side, although we have become used to large screens.
The climate controls were the biggest frustration. They were difficult to adjust on the small screen and not intuitive to use, particularly while driving. You cannot set a temperature directly. Instead, you have to use a sliding scale. It is baffling that BYD did not use the same setup as the Atto 3 and Atto 2, which are intuitive to use.
Interior Space
The Atto 1 is deceptively roomy. The long wheelbase and boxy shape give front and rear passengers more space than you would expect from a compact hatchback. It seats four, not five, but it is a comfortable four-seater.

Luggage space is small with the seats up, at 308 litres. Fold the rear seats and it grows to 940 litres, which is plenty for a car this size.

Interior quality is okay. The cabin mixes plastics with soft-touch surfaces. It feels on par with other petrol cars priced in the high $20,000s, but noticeably less plush than the similarly priced fully Geely EX2 and GAC Aion UT.
On the Road
The Atto 1 is a city car first. It is reasonably fun to drive around town because it is small and relatively light, at 1,390 kg. Like other EVs, it feels zippier than the 9.1-second 0-100 km/h claim suggests. It is not as dynamic to drive as the GAC Aion UT which offers a surprisingly fun driving experience.

The driver assistance suite is standard BYD and serviceable. Wind noise is definitely higher than in other BYD models. That matters little because most Atto 1 owners are unlikely to spend long periods on the highway.
Highway driving is possible, but it is not where the Atto 1 is at its best. Expect highway range of about 260 km, so longer trips need a charging stop (or two).

Battery, Range and Charging
The Atto 1 Premium has a 47.5 kWh LFP battery with 43.2 kWh usable. BYD claims 310 km of WLTP range at 139 Wh/km.
In our test, we drove 318 km from 100% to 4% and used about 41.5 kWh. That works out to about 130 Wh/km, roughly 6% better than the WLTP figure, and projects to around 330 km on a full battery. About 60 km of the drive was on the highway and the rest was urban driving in and around metro Sydney, so the result skews towards low-speed city running.
DC fast charging peaks at 85 kW, and a 10-80% charge takes about 30 minutes. On a 50 kW charger, the same charge takes about 38 minutes.
AC charging is quick for a compact hatchback, at up to 11 kW. That helps owners who rely on public AC chargers. A full charge from empty takes about 4.2 hours on an 11 kW three-phase charger and 6.5 hours on a 7 kW single-phase home wall charger. A standard 10A power point takes about 19.9 hours. Charging is where the Atto 1 saves money. A full charge is $3.02 on a home EV plan at 7c/kWh and $15.12 on a typical 35c/kWh flat tariff. Over 15,000 km a year, that is about $146 on an EV plan against $730 on a flat tariff, a saving of about $584.
Zecar's Take
The Atto 1 Premium suits anyone who wants a second car for urban running: it is roomier than it looks, easy to park, cheap to run and capable of short roadtrips.
Parts of the interior feel cheap at $31,113 driveaway, and its rivals such as the GAC Aion UT offers arguably better value at a similar price once GAC optimises its driver safety warnings. Parts of the interior feel cheap at $31,113 driveaway, and its rivals such as the GAC Aion UT offers arguably better value at a similar price. If you can get the Essential at $19,990 driveaway, this is excellent value, so long as you can put up with the compromises of a car with 220km of range.
Overall we recommend the Atto 1 Premium, however, it is worth cross-shopping with its rivals before you make a final decision.
