Key Points

  • XPENG ANZ is working with AASRA to support Australia's Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme (MVIS).
  • The scheme, which started in 2022, gives independent repairers access to service and repair information.
  • XPENG's technical onboarding with AASRA is expected to be completed in the coming months.

XPENG ANZ has confirmed it is working with the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority (AASRA) to support the country's Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme (MVIS).

The MVIS commenced in 2022 as Australia's first right-to-repair law. It requires vehicle manufacturers to share eligible service and repair information with independent repairers, giving customers more choice about where they service their cars.

XPENG ANZ will support both authorised and independent repair networks with access to that information in line with MVIS requirements. The company's technical onboarding with AASRA is expected to be completed over the coming months.

What the MVIS means for EV owners

The right-to-repair scheme applies to all new vehicles sold in Australia, including electric vehicles. It means owners are not locked into a manufacturer's dealer network for servicing and can choose an independent workshop that has access to the same technical information.

For EV owners, this is particularly relevant. Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars, but they still require regular maintenance such as tyre rotations, brake fluid changes, and cabin air filter replacements. Access to service information means independent mechanics can carry out this work without needing manufacturer approval.

XPENG's position

Brenton Dalton, National Service Development Manager at XPENG ANZ, said the company supports the scheme as a matter of principle.

"Supporting the Right to Repair is the right thing to do. Customers should have the freedom to choose where they service their vehicle, and we support initiatives that improve access to repair information," Dalton said.

"Our role is to support customer choice while earning preference through the quality, transparency and convenience of the authorised XPENG service experience. We are committed to working with AASRA and the wider industry to support MVIS."

XPENG ANZ will complete its technical onboarding with AASRA over the coming months. Once that process is finished, independent repairers will be able to access the eligible service and repair information for XPENG vehicles through the AASRA platform.

The company says it will continue working with AASRA and the wider industry to support access to information in accordance with MVIS requirements.
