New South Wales has placed an order for 151 new electric buses, taking the total number of zero-emission buses ordered since the March 2023 election to 921. The move marks another step in the state’s ambitious plan to phase out more than 8,000 diesel and gas buses across its network.
The new vehicles will be based at Sydney’s Leichhardt and Kingsgrove depots, which are currently being upgraded to handle electric fleets.

Building a Statewide EV Bus Network
NSW’s strategy goes beyond buses, it’s also about transforming the infrastructure that supports them. Eleven existing Sydney depots are being modified for zero-emission operations, while a new purpose-built electric bus facility is planned for Macquarie Park.
- Capacity: ~165 buses
- Construction start: Late 2025
- Completion: 2027
The government has also confirmed that local manufacturing will play a major role. Companies such as Western Sydney’s Custom Denning will supply many of the new buses, ensuring the program delivers economic as well as environmental benefits.
Currently, over 220 electric buses are already operating across Greater Sydney and Newcastle. With this latest order, the state expects about 1,700 EV buses on the road by 2028.

Other States Join the Shift
New South Wales is not alone in electrifying its public transport. Western Australia has also begun rolling out EV buses in Perth.
- 11 buses are already operating from the Malaga depot.
- The fleet will expand to around 90 by mid-2026.
- The depot is receiving a $12 million upgrade, including solar panels and battery storage, to become WA’s largest EV bus charging hub.
This growing national investment highlights how fleet electrification is becoming a cornerstone of Australia’s transport future.
