The Peugeot e-2008 GT SUV is currently by far the most affordable European manufactured electric car sold in Australia.

Peugeot's first electric car model sold in Australia has had a substantial price cut from $64,086 to $39,990 driveaway during their 2023 plate clearance period between May 1st and June 30th 2024.

The first time I saw an ad for the Peugeot e-2008 GT SUV it was priced at $64,085 driveaway which I thought was an unrealistic ask for an electric car with 328km WLTP range, however at it's current clearance price it is well worth considering as an electric SUV city runabout.

Last year's MG ZS EV base model Excite stock manufactured in China is also currently priced during their 2023 plate clearance at $39,990 driveaway like this Peugeot deal.

Recently I was able to borrow a media review loan e-2008 GT SUV from Peugeot so I could drive it for myself for a week.

The Peugeot e-2008 GT SUV overall reminds me of the MG ZS EV in size, small SUV shape and because both cars are based on a petrol car design, which means there is a transmission tunnel bump in the centre rear seat row.

Other similar features in both cars are:

  • Almost the same WLTP range of just over 320km. This is easily achievable in the city but I don't recommend either car for highway driving long distances as range at 110km/hr will drop to about 250km from 100% to flat and needing a tow truck.
  • No One Pedal Driving (OPD). OPD is usually liked more by veteran electric drivers whereas new comers to electric often prefer medium strength regen which is the maximum setting in both cars,
  • Smaller 10 inch central control screen compared to many other modern EVs,
  • Lots of buttons to control car features
  • Operating software also looks a bit dated for both however they do support wired Android Auto and Apple Carplay,
  • Only a reversing camera not a 360 camera,
  • Fast 11kW AC 3 phase charging

Some areas where the Peugeot e-2008 GT SUV is different, superior or inferior to the MG ZS EV Excite are:

Superior ✅

  • The e-2008 GT SUV has a panoramic opening glass roof vs ZS EV Excite solid metal roof,
  • The e-2008 GT SUV DC fast charging speed peaks at 100kW vs the ZS EV Excite which can only achieve 80kW max,
  • The interior of the e-2008 GT SUV feels more premium than the ZS EV Excite,
  • The e-2008 GT SUV has more safety inclusions like Blind Spot Detection (BSD) than the ZS EV Excite,
  • The driver & front passenger seats are heated in the e-2008 GT SUV but not in the ZS EV Excite,
  • Both cars have LED lights but the e-2008 GT SUV has distinctive LED Peugeot sabre tooth lion triple claw headlights and tail lights with front "fangs" which I thought looked better.

Inferior ❌

  • The e-2008 GT SUV has a 5 year unlimited km warranty vs the ZS EV Excite which has 7 years,
  • The e-2008 GT SUV doesn't support Vehicle to Load (V2L) eg: using your car to boil a kettle or run an induction cooktop while camping, which the ZS EV Excite does support V2L,

Different 🤷🏻

  • The e-2008 GT SUV steering wheel position had to be lower than I usually prefer because otherwise it would block the driver instrument cluster. I'm 1.91m tall so this may not be an issue for shorter drivers,
  • The e-2008 GT SUV 3D cockpit driver instrument cluster has a similar 3D effect to wearing those special glasses at a 3D movie cinema,

Overall the Peugeot e-2008 GT SUV provides a compelling alternative to the MG ZS EV Excite, especially if you've been waiting for a more affordable European manufactured SUV electric car to be your city runabout.
