MG S6 EV Approved For Australia — A Mid-Size SUV Gunning For Model Y

Comments

MG is gearing up to add another electric SUV to its Australian lineup, this time contender in the super competitive mid-size segment. Government approval documents have confirmed the upcoming MG S6 EV, which is expected to launch in the first half of 2026.

Although MG hasn’t officially unveiled the model yet, a combination of local regulatory filings, spy shots, and EU design patents paint a pretty clear picture of what’s on the way.

Variants and powertrains: rear-wheel and all-wheel drive

According to the federal approval listings, the MG S6 EV will offer both:

  • Single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD)
  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setups

Battery options will include:

  • 62.2 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) – likely standard in the base RWD variant
  • 77 kWh NCM (nickel manganese cobalt) – available across mid- and high-spec RWD, as well as AWD flagship variants

For performance-minded EV drivers, the AWD version packs a serious punch: 266 kW of combined power from a 119 kW front motor and 180 kW rear motor. That would put it on par with sporty mid-size competitors like the Tesla Model Y Long Range or the Kia EV6 AWD.

Design and proportions: sleek and grown-up

The S6 EV adopts MG’s newer, sportier design language, including: sharp LED headlights, a low-slung nose, and a bold lower bumper that echoes the styling of the MG 4 and Cyberster. The profile is clean and uncluttered, while the rear is finished with full-width tail lights, giving it a modern, polished look.

Although exact dimensions aren’t confirmed yet, photos suggest the SUV will be larger than the MG S5 EV. It will likely be in the same segment as the Model Y or BYD Sealion 7. There’s no confirmation of a third row, and it seems likely to offer two rows of seating, just like the Marvel R, which it effectively replaces in Europe.

Built on MG’s EV-first platform

The S6 EV will ride on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), the same dedicated EV platform used by the MG 4 and MG S5 EV. That’s a key detail for driving dynamics, efficiency, and tech integration. Unlike MG’s previous SUVs like the HS, which were rebadged models from sibling brand Roewe, the S6 EV is an original MG design, engineered with electrification from the ground up.

Being built on an EV-first platform offers several benefits including: weight distribution, battery packaging, and ride quality.

A serious player in the growing EV SUV segment

The MG S6 EV is shaping up to slot neatly between the MG S5 EV (which replaced the long-running ZS EV) and the upcoming IM6, a premium SUV from SAIC’s high-end IM Motors brand.

More importantly, it gives MG a real chance to compete with the likes of:

  • Tesla Model Y – Australia’s top-selling EV
  • BYD Sealion 7
  • Geely EX5
  • Xpeng G6

MG has already proven it can make affordable, appealing EVs with the MG 4 and S5 EV. If pricing remains competitive, the S6 EV could be a go-to pick for Aussie families looking to upgrade to something stylish, roomy, and electric.
