Great Wall Motor (GWM) is preparing to expand its Ora electric sub-brand beyond hatchbacks. A new SUV has surfaced through a Chinese government filing, revealing the brand’s first electric SUV, a model that could carry the Ora 5 nameplate in global markets.

A Familiar Look, Raised Higher
The new SUV closely mirrors the styling of the existing Ora hatchback, known locally as the GWM Ora. Circular headlights, slim tail-lights, and flowing bodywork give it a near-identical face to its smaller sibling.
At a glance, it appears to be a raised version of the hatch, but its proportions tell a different story. Measuring 4471mm long, 1883mm wide, and 1641mm tall on a 2720mm wheelbase, the SUV is 236mm longer, 58mm wider, and 11mm taller than the hatchback. That places it almost exactly in line with the MG S5 EV, a compact electric SUV rival.

Powertrain and Market Plans
According to the filing, the SUV will use a 150kW electric motor paired with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by GWM’s battery subsidiary, SVOLT. While battery capacity has not been disclosed, the technology points to a focus on affordability and durability.
The SUV is part of a broader expansion strategy, with four new Ora models planned in the near term. GWM Australia has previously confirmed that it will offer three EVs locally by the end of 2026, though it has not named which models will join the existing Ora hatchback.

Beyond Hatchbacks
Since its launch in 2018, Ora has focused heavily on electric hatchbacks, including the Funky Cat (sold here as the GWM Ora) and the retro-styled Ballet Cat. The Lightning Cat sedan and Touring wagon broadened the portfolio in China, but SUVs remained absent — until now.
Separately, GWM has also begun showcasing Haval-branded electric SUVs, signaling that multiple arms of the company are preparing EVs for international markets.
