BYD's car carrier Zhengzhou has left Shanghai carrying 4,810 electric vehicles (BEV and PHEVs) destined for Australia. The vessel is expected to dock in Melbourne on 2 June 2026, before continuing to Sydney and Brisbane. The shipment covers approximately 9,756 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean, with a transit time of around 14 days.
The voyage is the Zhengzhou's maiden trip to Australia and forms part of BYD's broader commitment to deliver 30,000 vehicles to Australian customers in the coming months. BYD says the shipment is a direct response to rising demand for affordable electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
What is on board
The 4,810 vehicles on board include BYD and DENZA models. The BYD Sealion 7 and Atto 2 together account for more than 2,000 units, making them the dominant models in the cargo. The DENZA B5 off-roader and D9 luxury people mover are also included.

The cargo will be distributed evenly between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to minimise delivery delays for customers along the east coast.

Delivery schedule and priority customers
The Zhengzhou is scheduled to arrive in Melbourne first on 2 June 2026, then proceed to Sydney and Brisbane. BYD says essential workers, including healthcare workers, teachers and emergency service providers, will be among the first to take delivery.
This shipment is described as a special additional consignment on top of BYD's regular supply. BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the arrival of the Zhengzhou marks a milestone for the brand in Australia.
"BYD is demonstrating that it has the ability to respond quickly to customer needs, and act fast. BYD's vertically integrated system allows it to scale production as required, with a fleet of BYD-owned vessels ready to take cars wherever they need to go almost anywhere in the world. BYD is truly unique in this way and Australian customers are benefiting directly as demand increases for innovative new energy vehicles that are affordable and cost-effective to run."
Captain Zhao Taotao, who commands the Zhengzhou, said the crew will ensure a stable and energy-efficient voyage and deliver all vehicles in perfect condition. BYD says more ship voyages to Australia are planned in the weeks and months ahead, with updates expected as each vessel departs China.
About the BYD Zhengzhou
The Zhengzhou is one of eight purpose-built, BYD-owned roll-on roll-off (RORO) car carriers. BYD owns and operates its own fleet of vessels, which the company says gives it the ability to scale and redirect supply quickly. The Zhengzhou's voyage to Australia covers approximately 9,756 kilometres and takes around 14 days.
BYD is not the only manufacturer to invest in dedicated shipping. In 2023, Ford Australia signed a three-year lease on a car carrier to create a direct pipeline between its Thailand factory, which builds the Ranger and Everest, and Australia.

BYD's sales momentum in Australia
BYD has more than doubled its Australian market share in the first four months of 2026, up more than 110 per cent year-on-year. In April 2026, BYD was the second best-selling brand in Australia, behind only Toyota and ahead of long-established brands including Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Mazda.

Latest Month (April 2026)The Sealion 7 has been a key driver of that growth. Sales of the mid-size SUV are up more than 300 per cent in 2026, putting it in direct competition with the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and Mazda CX-5.
Toyota, by contrast, has seen sales fall more than 20 per cent in the first four months of 2026. The brand's market share has dropped from over 20 per cent at the end of 2025 to 15.9 per cent in April 2026.
