Australia is one step closer to seeing what its most affordable electric SUV on the roads could be. The BYD Atto 2 has received regulatory approval for sale, signalling a launch that could arrive before the end of the year.
The new model will sit below the popular Atto 3 in BYD’s local line-up, offering a compact SUV body, advanced safety features, and the brand’s latest battery technology, all at a price point expected tobe under $40,000.

From approval to showroom: BYD’s next big move
Approval documents confirm two Atto 2 variants, both measuring 4.3 metres in length and designed with SUV practicality in mind. The Dynamic and Premium grades each feature a 51.13 kWh Blade Battery pack paired with a front-mounted motor.
BYD says the Atto 2 can deliver more than 300 km of WLTP range, with DC fast charging enabling a 10–80% top-up in around 37 minutes. A braked towing capacity of 750 kg and a ground clearance of 150 mm give it slightly more flexibility than the Dolphin hatchback.
This marks another milestone for BYD, which recently overtook Tesla as Australia’s top-selling EV brand.

Inside the cabin: compact SUV with a big-car feel
The Atto 2’s interior strikes a balance between minimalist design and modern tech. A digital driver display sits behind the wheel, while the infotainment screen, rotatable like other BYD models, comes in two sizes: 10.1 inches in the Dynamic and 12.8 inches in the Premium.
Both versions support Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. A panoramic sunroof adds light and space, helping the cabin feel larger than the Dolphin.
Passenger comfort is further supported by BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, which integrates Cell-to-Body construction for added rigidity and safety.
