The electric vehicle (EV) market is no stranger to surprises, but MG has really thrown a curveball with its latest model filing in China. Is this an all-new MG 4? A long-awaited MG 3 EV? Or something else entirely, the MG E5? While the name remains a mystery, one thing is clear: MG is gearing up for another model launch, and given the success of the MG 4 in Australia, this new model is one to watch.

Bigger, Bolder, and Possibly Better?
The new vehicle, revealed in filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), is expected to replace the current MG 4. But MG has hedged its bets, registering three potential nameplates.
Compared to the existing MG 4, the new model is:
- 108mm longer (total: 4395mm)
- 6mm wider (total: 1842mm)
- Up to 47mm taller (total: 1551mm)
- 45mm longer wheelbase (total: 2750mm)
This means a roomier cabin and potentially more comfort for Aussie drivers looking for a practical yet fun EV.

An Updated Design Inspired by the Cyberster
At first glance, this new MG sports a striking resemblance to the Cyberster roadster, with aggressive front-end styling and a sleeker overall design. The tail lights now feature a distinctive arrow-shaped design connected by a full-width light bar across the tailgate. Meanwhile, the side panels and headlights have been slightly softened, toning down the sharp, edgy look of its predecessor.

Powertrain & Performance
MG’s filings confirm that the new model will feature a 120kW electric motor and weigh 1485kg, notably lighter than the current MG 4’s base model, which produces 125kW and weighs 1635kg.
It will use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, though the capacity remains unknown. If MG plans to position this as a successor to the MG 4, we’d expect a battery lineup similar to the current 51kWh, 64kWh, and 77kWh options available in Australia.

What Does This Mean for Australia?
The MG 4 has been a success in Australia, ranking as the third best-selling EV in 2024, only trailing behind Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3. MG sold 6934 units last year, a massive 121.3% increase over the previous year. It even outsold the BYD Dolphin by a factor of three.
Given these strong numbers, it makes perfect sense for MG to introduce a refreshed version, especially if it offers improved range, technology, and interior space.
However, there’s also a chance that MG might follow a trend seen among Chinese brands by selling the new model alongside the existing MG 4. They’ve done it before, keeping the older ZS model in showrooms even after launching the facelifted ZST.
