The upcoming 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs are set to make their Australian debut with promising specifications that may position them as competitive alternatives to the Tesla Model Y. With a claimed driving range of up to 550km, these new electric vehicles (EVs) from Volkswagen are not only poised to offer long-range capabilities but also competitive pricing that might challenge the Tesla Model Y Long Range's position in the market.

While pricing details are yet to be officially confirmed by Volkswagen Australia, it's understood that the ID.4 Pro could start from around $76,000 to $77,000 plus on-road costs. When considering drive-away prices, this would place the vehicle potentially over $80,000, aiming to compete with the Tesla Model Y Long Range, which starts at $78,400 plus on-roads and has a slightly shorter claimed driving range of 533km.
On the other hand, the Volkswagen ID.5, with its coupe-styled design, is also expected to enter the market with a choice between the Pro version and the more powerful GTX variant. These models are poised to be more expensive than the entry-level Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive but offer additional features and performance.
The GTX is particularly notable for its dual electric motors, producing a combined 250kW/679Nm and capable of reaching 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds. Moreover, the higher-spec GTX variant is anticipated to be priced around $88,000 plus on-roads, positioning it as more affordable than the Tesla Model Y Performance while offering competitive features.

Prospective buyers can look forward to an array of modern features in the ID.4 and ID.5, including an 82kWh (gross) battery, enhanced electric motors with more power, and improved interior technology. The vehicles will also come equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen with new software enhancements, touch-sensitive sliders for volume and climate control settings, and various amenities including 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, and tri-zone climate control.
Charging capabilities for these models include up to 135kW DC and 11kW AC in the Pro models, with the GTX supporting even faster 175kW DC charging. This infrastructure will likely complement the existing public charging network in Australia, providing convenience and flexibility for EV owners.

The showroom arrival for the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 in Australia is scheduled for July 2024, with pre-orders expected to commence by the end of March, subject to any unforeseen delays. Volkswagen is optimistic about meeting the demand for these electric SUVs while strategically positioning them in the market to bridge the gap between the more conventional Tiguan and the upscale Touareg.
For those considering the switch to electric with a focus on range, performance, and advanced features, Volkswagen's electric twins might be worth waiting for as they hint at giving consumers more options in the expanding electric vehicle market.
