Kia has revealed the EV3, a new electric small SUV set to compete with the Hyundai Kona Electric, Volvo EX30, BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV. Scheduled for an Australian launch in 2025, the EV3 boasts upto 600km of range.
Kia positions the EV3 against the Hyundai Kona Electric and Volvo EX30 in terms of pricing - expected to be between US$35,000 (A$53,000) and US$50,000 (A$75,000). The higher end likely for the dual-motor GT.
By comparison Kia Niro EV currently sells for US$39,600 (A$60,000) and US$44,600 ($67,500) in the US.
Key Specifications: Range, Charging, Performance
Built on Hyundai-Kia Group's E-GMP platform, the EV3 comes in standard and extended-range variants which feature a 58.3kWh and 81.4kWh battery respectively.
The EV3 delivers a best-in-class range of up to 600km (WLTP) on the extended range model - the longest range of any Kia EV.
Both variants feature a 150kW/283Nm electric motor delivering a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds and a 170km/h top speed.
Like the EV5 it will be built on a 400-volt charging architecture, capable of being from 10-80% in just 31 minutes. Kia has not quoted the maximum charge rate, but based on the figures provided we expect the maximum charge rate to be ~150 kW DC.
As is standard with all Kia EVs, it will feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing you to power small appliances on the go.
Size, Interior and Design
The EV3's boxy dragon face design is reminiscent of the Kia EV9, which it shares many similar design elements with, inside and out.
At 4300mm long, 1850mm wide and 1560mm tall, on a 2680mm wheelbase, the EV3 has similar exterior dimensions to Kia Seltos petrol car however will offer more interior space due to its long wheelbase. Compared to existing Kia EV models, it is most similar in size to the Kia Niro EV.
The EV3 offers best-in-class cargo space with a 460-liter boot and a 25-liter frunk. Sustainable materials like recycled fabrics and PET plastics are used throughout the interior to minimize environmental impact.
Inside, the EV3's interior is designed to be a comfortable and functional space for five adults. The spacious cabin features an innovative sliding table and ample storage.
The EV3 boasts a roomy dash with a panoramic display featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, and a separate climate control display. Notably, Kia retains physical buttons for crucial functions unlike some EV competitors. The interior also uses recycled materials and eco-friendly plastics.
Advanced Technology
The EV3 is packed with technology, including a built-in generative AI voice assistant, advanced driver-assistance features, and support for a digital key and in-vehicle entertainment options.
The EV3 comes equipped with a range of advanced safety and driver-assistance features typically found in larger SUVs. These features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Highway Driving Assist, providing exceptional peace of mind on the road. The EV3 also boasts innovative features like Kia's new i-Pedal 3.0 regenerative braking system.
The EV3 offers a comprehensive suite of connectivity and entertainment features to keep you engaged on the go. Kia's Premium Streaming service provides access to streamable content, while arcade games add a touch of fun for passengers. The Harman Kardon sound system delivers a premium audio experience.
Global Launch Plans
Kia plans to offer a sportier EV3 GT-Line with unique styling cues at launch, with a dual-motor EV3 GT to follow later.
The EV3 is set to be launched first in Korea in July 2024, followed by Europe later in the year and Australian ext year.
