The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 now have a quirky performance luxury sibling.
The Genesis GV60 is set to arrive in Australia from September with two high-spec variants priced from $103,700 to $110,700 before on-road costs.
It offers a driving range of up to 470km (WLTP) and unique standard features like digital camera-based wing mirrors, fingerprint recognition, and the choice of free public charging or a home wallbox charger.
It's joined by the Genesis Electrified GV70 medium SUV and Electrified G80 limousine as part of the South Korean marque's push into the all-electric premium car segment.
Compared to the current top-spec Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD and Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD, the jump into the base GV60 AWD is $27,800 and $20,710 more expensive respectively. Against the big German luxury carmakers, it is $21,210 dearer than the Volvo C40 Recharge Twin, but still $47,200 cheaper than the larger Audi e-Tron Sportback 50 quattro.
The coupe-like crossover SUV also competes against models like the Volvo C40 Recharge, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Tesla Model Y, the forthcoming Kia EV6 GT and more.
Genesis GV60 Size and Design
The South Korean-made Genesis GV60 is the first model from the marque to be based on the Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that’s shared with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
Compared to its siblings, it adopts Genesis’ signature Crest Grille and double line headlights and taillights with a coupe-like sloping rear and a palette of gloss and optional matte exterior colours like São Paulo Lime, Atacama Copper, Meblurne Grey and more.
Inside, there are three different interior options tied to each variant with all featuring a circular theme across the crystal sphere drive selector, door handles, side mirror adjusters and horn cover. Genesis says it uses “low environmental impact materials”, but comes standard with quilted nappa leather seats.
The five-seater GV60 has two ISOFIX child seat anchor points, the rear row can recline and fold in a 60/40 split, and there’s a 20-litre frunk under the front bonnet.
The GV60 boasts a drag coefficient of 0.29.
Genesis GV60 Range and Powertrain
With only two variants on offer, the Genesis GV60 range consists of one battery pack and two electronically controlled all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrains.
The base GV60 AWD brings a 74kWh (usable) battery pack providing up to 470km of claimed range (WLTP) on a full charge and dual front and rear electric motors good for a 0-100km/h time in 5.5 seconds.
Stepping up to the GV60 Performance AWD uses the same battery pack, but gains upgraded twin electric motors to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.0 seconds when the dedicated 10-second ‘Boost Mode’ is activated (or 4.6 seconds without). However, driving range drops slightly to a claimed 466km (WLTP).
The high-po flagship also adds an electronic rear limited slip differential and electronic control suspension that adapts to the road ahead.
The luxury crossover is rated to tow up to 1600kg braked or 750kg unbraked.
Genesis GV60 Charging
Thanks to the E-GMP platform, the Genesis GV60 can charge on an 800-volt class architecture. It is also compatible with 400-volt DC fast chargers by doubling the voltage.
It’s capable of up to 233kW DC ultra rapid speeds and 11kW AC on a compatible charger.
The South Korean marque says a 10 to 100 per cent refill using the supplied 2.3kW trickle charger plugged into a standard household outlet takes around 34 hours and 20 minutes. On an 11kW AC wallbox charger, the same charge takes about 7 hours and 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, on the most common 50kW DC fast charger offered in Australia by most major public charging providers, a 10 to 80 per cent top-up takes 73 minutes. However, using an 800-volt 350kW DC ultra rapid station cuts charging times to only 18 minutes.
As an added perk, all new GV60 owners can choose between a free five-year Chargefox subscription to its nationwide network of AC and DC chargers or a free Genesis-branded 7.2kW AC Wallbox Pulsar Plus home charger and install (subject to standard install criteria).
The GV60 uses a standard Type 2/CCS2 charging connector placed on the rear-right side of the vehicle. It is capable of vehicle-to-load (V2L), meaning it can be used as a large battery bank for powering or charging other electrical devices and appliances at up to 3.6kW. All models feature a V2L plug inside the cabin and outside via the charging port using an adapter.
All GV60s include a heat pump which saves energy consumption in colder weather conditions.
Genesis has also confirmed it features battery preconditioning that allows the crossover to achieve optimum DC fast charging speeds when a public station is set as the destination within its built-in navigation system.
Like the Ioniq 5 and EV6, the GV60 offers a range of regenerative braking levels that can be toggled via steering wheel paddles, including ‘i-Pedal’ for one pedal driving and automatic adaptive regen using the front radar sensors.
Genesis GV60 Safety and Technology
The Genesis GV60 has obtained a five-star ANCAP safety rating under the 2022 testing criteria.
As standard, the luxury crossover EV comes with a host of active safety assistance technologies dubbed ‘Genesis Active Safety Control’, including auto emergency braking (AEB) with car, pedestrian, cyclist, junction turning and lane-change oncoming side detection, blind spot and rear cross traffic warning and collision avoidance assist, blind spot camera view monitor, lane following and keeping assist, and stop/go smart cruise control with machine learning capabilities.
Additionally, all GV60’s also include a 360-degree surround view camera, front, side and rear parking sensors, centre side airbag, safe exit assist, rear occupant warning, full LED lights with high beam assist, intelligent front lighting system, multi collision brake and evasive steering assist.
Unique to the GV60 are standard camera-based digital side mirrors that are shown on two OLED screens in the cabin, which replaces traditional wing mirrors.
The interior also features a 12.3-inch infotainment system and 12.3-inch driver’s digital instrument display joined on one single panel. It runs Genesis’ own software and can be controlled via touch or a physical controller on the centre console with handwriting recognition, includes built-in maps, navigation with augmented reality (AR) function, and wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.
It’s complemented by a head up display (HUD), Qi wireless charging pad, three USB-C charging ports, and a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen branded speaker system.
