The BYD Atto 2 DM-i is now Australia's cheapest plug-in hybrid, priced from $24,990 before on-road costs for the Essential and $29,990 for the Premium. Both variants pair a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 145kW electric motor and a Blade LFP battery, driving the front wheels.
How much you save
The Essential undercuts the next most affordable PHEV in Australia, the BYD Sealion 5 Essential, by $9,000. It also sits $7,000 below the electric Atto 2 Dynamic at $31,990 and around $10,000 under the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, which is listed at $34,990 drive-away until 30 September 2026. Even the better-equipped Premium at $29,990 saves $4,000 against the Sealion 5 Essential.

Savings at the pump
The Premium carries an 18.03kWh Blade battery with 90km of WLTP electric range and a WLTP combined fuel figure of 0.7L/100km. The Essential uses a 7.85kWh battery with 39km of electric range and 1.8L/100km. With regular charging, most short daily trips can be completed on battery power alone, so petrol spend drops to occasional longer runs. Total driving range is up to 895km on the Premium and 845km on the Essential.
Both variants charge on AC only at up to 3.3kW. There is no DC fast charging. A 15 to 100 per cent charge takes 2.7 hours in the Essential and 6.1 hours in the Premium.
What you get
The $24,990 Essential includes 16-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting, a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.8-inch digital cluster, six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera.
The $29,990 Premium adds 17-inch alloys, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker sound system, a panoramic sunroof, roof rails, synthetic leather trim, heated front seats, a six-way power driver's seat, a 50W wireless charger, and Vehicle-to-Load with a discharge adapter.
BYD covers the vehicle with a 6-year or 150,000km warranty and the traction battery with 8 years or 160,000km, whichever comes first.
