Volvo ES90: Australia’s First Electric Volvo Sedan Arrives

Comments
Volvo ES90

Volvo is preparing to shake up Australia’s premium EV market with the arrival of its first all-electric sedan. With its fastback profile, elevated ride height, and expansive cabin, the ES90 blurs the line between sedan and SUV, bringing a fresh alternative to traditional electric luxury cars.

Customer deliveries begin in early 2026, but orders are already open.

A Liftback That Doesn’t Fit Neatly in a Box

Instead of replacing the S60 sedan directly, the ES90 aims to combine sedan elegance with SUV practicality. At nearly 5 metres long, it sits shoulder to shoulder with the BMW i5 in size, but its longer 3.1m wheelbase offers more interior stretch.

The design prioritises aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of 0.25Cd, Volvo’s most slippery car yet. It doesn’t quite match the Mercedes-Benz EQE’s 0.22, but the ES90 remains one of the most efficient shapes on the road.

Two Variants for Australia

At launch, Australians will see two rear-wheel-drive, single-motor variants. Volvo has yet to confirm whether dual-motor versions offered overseas will make it here.

Pricing (before on-road costs):

ModelPrice
2026 Volvo ES90 Plus Single Motor$88,880
2026 Volvo ES90 Ultra Single Motor$107,990

Compared with rivals, the ES90 undercuts the competition by a wide margin:

  • Mercedes-Benz EQE 300 — $135,200
  • Genesis Electrified G80 — $155,000
  • BMW i5 — $155,900

Performance and Range

Both ES90 variants sit on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, shared with the flagship EX90 SUV, and use an advanced 800V electrical architecture for faster charging.

  • Battery: 92kWh
  • Motor: 245kW / 480Nm (rear-mounted)
  • 0–100km/h: 6.9 seconds
  • WLTP Range: 554km
  • Fast Charging: Up to 300km in 10 minutes (350kW DC charger)

Overseas dual-motor versions boast up to 500kW of power and 700km WLTP range, but Volvo hasn’t locked these in for local sale.

The ES90 debuts Volvo’s new “Superset” technology stack, a unified hardware and software base that will underpin future electric models.

Standard features include:

  • Head-up display
  • 14.5-inch central touchscreen with Google built-in
  • Four-zone climate control
  • Heated front and rear seats, steering wheel, and wiper blades

With the recent retirement of the petrol-powered S60 and V60 Cross Country, the ES90 becomes Volvo’s only passenger car in Australia. It joins the EX30, EX40, and EX90 SUVs, ensuring Volvo maintains variety in an increasingly SUV-heavy lineup.
