EV being charged with Nox socket

Key Points

  • Nationwide Rollout – Nearly 2,000 charging sockets to be installed in 16 apartment buildings across Australia.
  • Funding Boost – $4.78 million project supported by $1.51 million from ARENA.
  • Level 1 Advantage – Affordable, slow charging solution designed for overnight use.

Australia’s apartment residents are set to benefit from one of the largest electric vehicle (EV) charging rollouts in the country. NOX Energy has secured funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to deliver nearly 2,000 Intelligent Power Sockets (IPS) nationwide, aiming to make EV charging accessible, affordable, and equitable for strata communities.

Breaking Barriers for Apartment Residents

EV adoption in apartment living has long been hindered by costly infrastructure upgrades and limited access to reliable charging. NOX Energy’s $4.78 million initiative will be supported with $1.51 million from ARENA grant under the Driving the Nation Program.

Instead of installing high-cost Level 2 chargers, the project introduces Level 1 IPS technology. This solution enables slower but more affordable charging while vehicles are parked overnight, creating an accessible pathway for apartment dwellers to own EVs. The average EV driver will be able to cover their daily distance (40km) in less than 2 hours charging via the NOX socket.

Over three years, installations will take place across 16 complexes, from new developments to older buildings. Upgrades will range from small electrical works to larger retrofits, with rooftop solar integration in some sites to encourage load-shifting during peak solar generation.

A Model Built on Fairness and Flexibility

The NOX Energy system uses a pay-as-you-go model. EV drivers cover their electricity costs at the strata’s retail tariff plus a small service fee, while owners corporations are fully reimbursed. Importantly, apartment owners without EVs do not subsidise charging costs.

Each Intelligent Power Socket links to a cloud-based management system that provides access control, billing transparency, and load balancing. This low-impact approach allows installations without major disruption while ensuring charging remains reliable and fairly distributed.

Independent research will accompany the rollout, with the Electric Vehicle Council and other partners monitoring performance data and resident feedback. Findings will help shape future EV policies and practical charging solutions for high-density living.

Industry and Community Support

Wylie Chak, Co-founder and Director at NOX Energy, described the grant as a milestone for Australian innovation. “With ARENA’s support, we can begin to break down one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership,” he said.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller echoed this sentiment, calling the rollout “a great example of Australian innovation tackling real-world barriers.”

Project partners include property developers HENNY, strata managers Stratablox, Mayfield, and Tideways, technology firms MiMOR and MOX, and advisor Wattblock.
