How the savings work
A novated lease lets you pay for a vehicle and its running costs from your pre-tax salary. The savings come from several places:
- No GST on the purchase price of the vehicle
- FBT exemption on eligible electric and plug-in hybrid models under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles
- Pre-tax payment of insurance, registration, servicing, tyres, and charging costs
- Discounted fleet pricing negotiated by the leasing provider
For BYD's electric models, the FBT exemption is the largest single contributor, which is why the advertised total savings figures run into the tens of thousands over a five-year term.
Charging cost claims
The ATO allows two methods for claiming electricity used to charge a novated lease EV. You can use the flat rate of 4.2 cents per kilometre, or claim actual charging costs from public charger receipts and home electricity bills. You must pick one method and cannot mix them.
Used BYDs
Second-hand BYDs can be novated, but to qualify for the FBT exemption the vehicle must have been first used on or after 1 July 2022 and must have been under the FBT threshold of $91,387 when new.
Terms and conditions
Vehicles must be ordered between 1 and 30 September 2026 and delivered by 31 October 2026. The 5% discount applies to the base vehicle list price and excludes registration, CTP, stamp duty, dealer delivery, and statutory charges. Metallic paint costs extra. The offer is not available to fleet customers, demonstrator or service loan vehicles, and cannot be combined with cashback offers or any other promotion. Discounts are subject to manufacturer discretion and stock availability.
Advertised costs are estimates based on a gross annual salary of $85,000, a 60-month lease, 15,000 km per year, and a vehicle purchased in NSW. Your actual cost and savings depend on your personal circumstances and eligibility. This information is general in nature and is not financial advice.
